Live is BACK! Connecting with the crowd, breaking out old material. Iris, MS, BoG, W,D. Stomping Chad is back in full form, Pat was more lively than I have seen him in years, Ed looked to be having a great time!
Friends of Live finally paid off. All these years of fan club membership and this is the first show with a fan club presale, it paid off too, 5th row center. Great seats, the Paramount Theater is a pretty nice venue too. The first 10 rows or so were folding chairs that as the night progressed got closer and closer to the stage as people pushed forward.
The main set was really good, some older stuff and a few new tracks. With no Railo in the band (Yippie!) Pat did the keyboard "electronica" intro to I Alone on his bass, very cool effect. Lakini’s simply rocked. Lightning Crashes sounded great with a 2000 piece harmony and rhythm section. Ed was talking with crowd a great deal, more that I have seen him in many many years. Ed talked about how he loves Denver/Boulder. Ed comes out here to work with Intergral Naked and Ken Wilber.
The main set was really, really good, but the first encore was AMAZING. This is the Live that I remember: Overcome, Mirror Song, Iris, White, Discussion, WOW! Ed intro'ed Mirror Song saying they probably had not played it in Colorado since sometime in '92. (Someone up front told Ed that was their show at the Fox Theater, however, they didn't play the Fox until 1994. Ed was thinking of their show at the Marquee Club in '92. (Great show by the way)). Iris is simply one of my favorite songs live, the energy is amazing. And White, Discussion is back in the mix, a great way to end a set, so much energy. Ed forgot the words to the second verse, he just stood there trying to remember them, he finally remembered and they continued. During the song Ed asked CT what he would play on American Idol if he had the chance, he pondered it a moment and broke into a rockin' version of "Mary Had A Little Lamb".
The second encore was not as high energy, but a great way to end the show. They played Beauty of Gray which was not on the setlist. And the entire crowd sang the reprise of "Dance With You" to end the show.
At the end of the show we worked our way up to the stage to see if we could snag a setlist or something. Viki managed to get one of CT's guitar picks and Ed's lyrics to Simple Creed that were taped to the stage. He also had the lyrics to "I Walk The Line" up there, guess he needs to get White, Discussion taped up there too.
Since we decided to make a weekend of our trip to Denver for the Live show. We figured we could wait by the tour buses and try to meet the guys one more time. Adam came out first, talked with everyone, gave autographs, very nice guy. CG and Pat came out a little later, they chatted briefly signed some autographs and headed off to the hotel. CT must have been the last person out of the venue, and he was feeling no pain. Ed must have snuck out no one saw him leave. We had everyone sign the "Simple Creed" lyric sheet and my 12" of Four Songs. I told each of them that I was SO pleased to be hearing the old stuff. Pat said to wait there is more to come!!! |

I just saw LIVE last night at The Paramount in Denver. This was the third time I've seen them and not once... even for a second... was I disappointed. I love that they added some old songs to this show (including VooDoo Lady and Iris)... this is by far my fav. show. I can't put into words how much I love this band!! |

I've been a die-hard since '91, but my husband has mostly just "tolerated" them because I'm such a huge fan... until Friday night, that is. About ½ way through the concert, he turned to me and yelled, "Holy shit, these guys are really good! This is amazing!" I've been telling people for years that you have to see these guys in concert before you fully appreciate what a great band they are... That brings my official tally of converted to 5.
I was hoping they would play some of their older stuff - and they really delivered. My favorite song was definitely "Lakini's Juice." My God, it was soooo fucking good... I nearly had an orgasm!! The only other song I wished for (but didn't get) was "Shit Towne." I would have also enjoyed "Pain Lies...", since that's the song that first made me a fan, but hearing "Mirror Song" was almost just as good - I almost cried when Ed was singing it. Ahhh... it really took me back to all those high school inner-turmoil years.
The new stuff sounded good, but it's far less... edgy. Ed's song writing style seems to have mellowed quite a bit, but I think it's just that natural thing that happens when you hit your early-mid 30s. At any rate, as long as they keep playing songs from the entire library, I'll be happy. I also think Ed should scale back a bit on the cheesy here's-where-I-show-off-my-sexy-abs routine. I know Ed loves to put on a show for the ladies, but that's boy-band material.
I hope Ed keeps his promise about being back in the fall... |

Where to start. Drove 12 hrs from St. Louis to Denver to deliver my wife in front of Live for her birthday. Long drive but worth every mile. We stayed at the Denver Center (1 block from venue/walking distance on a beautiful evening). Had great seats lower level, half way. The Paramount was a cool place and Live had the place rocking from the start. Played long and hard (everyone stood, sang and danced from the opening song). We have been traveling around and catching their shows for the last 10 yrs or so. It is kind of our little out of the ordinary thing we do. My wife is a Live fanatic and I hit a homerun with this B-day (with a little help from the band). We got up the next morning and to her surprise headed up in in the mountains (Silverthorne) and stayed for another 4 days. Great show, great trip, and we are already planning our next venture to catch a
show. |
