The bras fly for Nickelback Nickelback (with Live & Danko Jones)
review by: Erin Harde
We're talking every breath, every inflection -- exactly the same as the recorded version.
Unlike Nickelback, second opener Live has been around long enough to be comfortable with spontaneity. Its 12-song set started with sleepy versions of the hits "All Over You" and "Selling the Drama," both from Throwing Copper, but singer Ed Kowalczyk worked himself into a slow crescendo as he moved through old favourites and five new songs from Songs from Black Mountain, including "The River," the first single.
"You guys are our guinea pigs," Kowalczyk said. "But you're pretty guinea pigs."
While "Lightening Crashes" prompted loud approval and a sea of lighters, it was "Lakini's Juice" and "The Dolphin's Cry" that got both Kowalczyk and the crowd moving.
By the last song, Kowalczyk had stripped off his white beater, to the delight of screaming female fans. But, alas, no bras for Live. They were being hoarded for Kroeger.
Toronto's Danko Jones opened the show and spent most of his time on stage getting the crowd to chant his name. When he wasn't coping with self-esteem issues, his black-clad trio thrusted through some naughty tunes with speed and vigour.
Before tearing into "First Date," Jones asked an obliging crowd: "How many of you kiss on the first date?
"You people are a very slutty bunch," he added. "I should be down there in the crowd." |
