It rocked big time, the band was in
top form. There was a great mix of old and new, something for everyone.
I can't wait for the next tour, hope it rolls around soon. I won tickets to
the meet and greet afterwards and the guys were great. They signed autographs
and had photos taken with the fans even though they had spent about an hour and a
half onstage. They ROCK!!!!! |

It may suffice to say that the last
review was a little underwhelming. Of the four times LiVe have visited these shores
this was the best, most polished and energetic concert yet.
My journey to the concert consisted of a flight of 500km, a $50 taxi and a hour long
wait in the line, so when the doors opened I was estactic. Having never been to the
St James in Auckland, I didnt know what to expect (Live had always played at the
Queen's Wharf in Wellington on the previous three tours) but managed to squeeze myself
into the front two rows, somewhere close to Pat.
Opening band Evermore were nice, got quite a nice reaction from the crowd too, despite
being from Feilding. They got the crowd pumped up and didnt overstay their welcome.
Live hit the stage about 9.10ish to a rapturous ovation. They kicked straight into
Like I Do, I really wanted to hear this one in concert as It's one of my faves from
Birds of Pray. And it didnt disappoint. Did seem like they adjusted the sound levels
during the song but wasnt noticable enough to detract from the perfomance. From there
it went onto The Sanctity of Dreams, which mellowed the crowd out. (Although it must
be mentioned that any time Ed came towards the front of the stage the front three
rows went nuts, and he was almost always at the front). Then came All Over You, and
the moshing started. Chad G was going nuts on the drums and the Ed's voice was lower
than the last time I saw them on the V tour. They Sttod UP For LOve was great, first
time I'd heard the different version that I've only heard on MP3. Shit Towne was
awesome, with the different layers of guitars and Pat's underlying kick-ass bass,
Ed even sung the God bless Auckland, :)
I knew PLOTR the instant the first snare was hit, awesome song to see live, first
time since the Secret Samadhi concert years ago that I'd heard it. The three new
songs went down really were, as Sweet RElease and Runaway are both being played on
radio stations over here, Sweet Release is a lot better in concert as the band kicks
through the chorus, maybe
they use a different sound mix but the songs hits you like a bullet to the nuts.
By now the band was totally on, enjoying themselves and feeding off the manic vibe
that the crowd was excreting. Ed kept mentioning how hot he was which made all the
ladies scream, And just when I thought i couldn't get any better they found another
level on which to play as they began the 'second half' of the concert with Lakini's
Juice. A little teasing to begin with and then that booming guitar line and jackhammer
of a drum beat and the already pumped crowd went ballistic. Chad's stomp was just
metres from where I was and the way he and Ed interacted was classic. The tempo slowed
just a little as they played Run To The Water, The Dolphin's Cry was awesome, real
hard song to mosh to, the moshing is basically the whole song and that's tiring.
Love the way it ends with Adam and Chad singing as Ed improves over the end, it gets
me every time.
Then a little tease of I Alone, the crowd didnt know, but I did :) ANd when it hit,
and din of voices sang every word. Much longer version now with the Like A Stone
verse, but dipping back into the song after the I Alone bit of Like A Stone's great.
Beautiful song in concert, worth the price of a ticket alone.
And of course Heaven, Heaven was a massive crossover hit here so everyone knows the
words and sang along. Cool song to see first time, Chad's guitar chords drive the
song effortlessly, seeing him perform it in concert is unique.
Then the tiniest intermission, where the crowd went nutso, stomping and clapping
and being general monkeys. Ed came back out with his accoustic and played Turn My
head. Nice version, hope its on the DVD if they ever release one, his voice was on,
a lot better than the last tour, managing to keep the notes more fluid and less pitched.
He carried the accoustic through to the start of Selling the Drama until the rest
of the band came out and made it electric at the start of the first chorus. AMAZING.
At some point in the song, if i remember correctly, Chad came over to Pat's foot
stomp when he wasn't looking a pressed down one of the buttons, the look on Pat's
face (a whatthe?) and then on Chad's (wasn't me hehehehe) were priceless.
Lighthouse came next and by then the crowd was so wired they could have played Mary
was a Little Lamb and they wouldnt have gone mental. And then Lightning Crashes.
Never have I heard a reaction to the song like the one they got at the ST James,
whenever there was the slightest gap in the song the crowd appluded and whopped it
up. Crazy.
Then the White, Discussion. I hadn't seen it since the first time they toured and
was amazed at the power and intensity at which they still manage to perform it. No
leaving the stage while the instruments still played though.
Lastly came Dance With You, a real message to thew crowd in attendance. Allowing
the masses to depart on a little less frenetic pace than with White Discussion and
involving a lot of call and answer lyrical play by Ed to the crowd.
All in all the best concert I've been to yet and can't wait for them to come back
and play again. |
