I still don't have words to describe
last night but here goes... This is going to be a long one so go and make yourself
some coffee or get yourself a beer and come along for the ride..
We arrived at the venue much later than planned and when I saw how many people there
wete, I almost shat myself! One of my friends went to park the car and then came
back to fetch us - there were separate entrances for Golden Circle ticket holders.
Thank God! We got in at about 6:15 and found a good spot towards the front and center
of the stage. After we've settled I went to find out if the backstage passes have
arrived. Weren't there yet. Went back to my friends and I, then had the difficult
task of deciding who of my three friends was going to go to the meet and greet with
me. I wrote their names on pieces of paper and asked the guys next to us to pick
one. Very fair I think. We went back to the ticket office and received our passes.
Now I could relax and enjoy the show.
At 8 Prime Circle came on and man did Cape Town love them! Everybody sang with. They
rocked! We then had to wait a bit for the guys to change the instruments and so on..
At some stage I looked up to the stage and recognised Shawn Williams. I called out
his name and blew him a kiss. He was absolutely dumbstruck that someone in the crowd
knew him.
And then.... the big moment! The crowd just absolutely roared when the guys came
on stage. I did not expect Overcome and the crowd went wild. Before Ed started singing
he said something like "the President of my country thought it good to, on Thanksgiving
Day, give the people of Iraq mashed potatoes and gravy, instead of giving them back
their country" Or something like that.... Crowd going wild! He said that this
song is for everyone who have died or suffered because of this war. And then the
2nd surprise... Dance with you! It was so good to hear this song played again. I
was sad that PLOTRS was left out, but hey man we got Lighthouse!
The crowd sang with to each and every song, new ones and old ones. When they came
on stage for the 2nd Encore Ed said that he thinks that they will just carry on playing
for us forever, as we were such a rocking crowd! The energy level was through the
roof! Much more so than what I've seen on videos of recent shows. Lots of beer and
the guys were having so much fun. Pat had a permanent grin on his face. Lots of interaction
with each other on the stage and with the crowd. Chad and Ed were all over the stage.
They strutted their stuff and were sexy as hell! You know those moments when Ed looks
into the crowd and you are sure he is singing just for you!
And now for some breaking news or maybe not...Sometime during the show Ed started
telling us that Chad T has three kids, Pat has three, Adam has lots that he does
not know of and he, Ed, has a daughter and another LITTLE SOMETHING ON THE WAY!!
Another little Kowalczyk! Sweet!!
After White Discussion, the guys were fooling around on the stage. Ed grabbed Chad's
guitar and was swinging it over the crowd while Chad was chasing him. Ed then threw
the guitar across the stage to Chad. Perfect catch, thank God! As we were moving
out, the crowd gave a huge roar and when we looked up Chad and Ed were waving to
us from the balcony, each with a beer in the hand drinking a toast to us.
Ok, so now for the after show... We were shown into a room and waited around for
about 15 to 20 minutes. Chad T came in first. I walked up to him and wished him a
happy birthday for Monday, got a kiss and a hug! Such a cool guy! The other guys
came in and I thought I'd wait to speak to Ed when he is not surrounded by so many
people. The guys were in high spirits...after quite a few beers I imagine.
Went up to Chad G, and yes got my hug and my kiss. Spoke to him for a while about
tonight's 46664 concert. I asked him if there was any way that they would be performing
and he said it's not likely. He is such a sweetie pie and even better good looking
in real life.
I then moved on to Adam and yes, another hug and kiss! I asked him where I can get
hold of his CD and whether he perhaps had ant with him that I can buy. He said to
hold on and came back with a CD. When I asked him how much I owe him he said nothing,
it's a huge pleasure and thanked me for taking and interest. He is just so cool.
Ok so next I just walked up to Mr. Kowalczyk, took him by the shoulders, looked into
his eyes and said: "Edward, I need a hug and a kiss" He looked back at
me and said: "well I better give it to you then" I got my hug and kiss!!
At that stage I thought I better start getting my stuff autographed before it's too
late. I spotted Pat (he wasn't there earlier) clowning around. He is so funny! I
asked him for..wait for it.. yes, you've got it...a hug and a kiss! He asked me what
my name was and I said Magda, which he couldn't really pronounce, so I said Maggie
is fine. OMG, that just set him off about his pug at home that's called Maggie. He
was talking with an Irish accent and telling is all kinds of shit. After he autographed
my stuff he gave me another hug. When I said to him that I'm also a Gemini, he said
well he should have known that. Very sweet!
I then asked Adam and Chad G to sign my stuff, Chad T disappeared in the mean time
so I didn't get his autograph. I then went back to Ed and asked him to sign my CD
booklets. As he went from one to the other (six in total) he said that I spend way
too much money on them, but that I obviously have good taste in music. I also spoke
to Shawn Williams and he said he was so surprised when someone called out his name
from the crowd, but couldn't really see where it came from.
We then decided to leave. I got what I came for and more. I didn't want to expect
too much but I was not disappointed. Hugs and kisses from all of them! Great stuff!
I did not think I could love and admire this band more than I already do, but I adore
them more than ever. They just amazed and wowed me! I did not think that any concert
good be better than the one in 2000, but it was. Thank you LIVE for a rocking experience
and making my dream come true!! We hope to see you again in the very near future! |

Live, live

The weekendís spectacular 46664 Aids concert in Cape Town somewhat overshadowed another
major musical event in the city ñ the wrapping up of the local leg of US alternative
rock band Liveís world tour.
Not that this concert was in any way compromised by the massive media attention thrown
in the way of Saturday nightís concert, because the Bellville Velodrome was still
packed with a capacity crowd on Friday night.
In many ways, both the venue and the band offered a more intimate and engaging concert,
but it is of course impossible to even start comparing the two events.
This is Liveís second visit to the country, and the band have steadily grown a strong
following in South Africa, especially with young, white students. Indeed, there were
few dark faces at the venue apart from those working there, while there were very
few people over the age of 40. I would think these were primarily parents of star-struck
youngsters, hoping to prevent their kids becoming groupies and doing foolish things
like baring their breasts for all to see during the interval (yes, they did!). Or
maybe these ageing rock fans were there hoping to see just that.
The evening started with the talented and up-and-coming local support band Prime
Circle, who had a bit of a Pearl Jam sound to them, and were lapped up by the appreciative
audience.
But it was Live we were all there to see, and boy, we werenít disappointed. The sheer
energy and presence of frontman Ed Kowalczyk, along with the familiar guitar-heavy
sound and a wise mix of old classics and new material had the audience mesmerised.
Although the 'Birds of Prey' tour was meant to showcase their new album of the same
name, and mostly did, it's safe to say many of us were there to hear some of their
older material, especially from what is arguably still their best album, 1994's 'Throwing
Copper'. Their rendition of 'Lightning Crashes' was breathtakingly superb, you really
could feel it, "forces pulling from the centre of the Earth..."
Live has often been compared to bands such as U2 and REM, and the mix of that heady
rock feel with intelligent, sometimes spiritual lyrics and a healthy dose of activism
(Kowalczyk had a go at Bushís fleeing visit to Iraq) ably brings them into that league,
even though their success hasnít quite matched their bigger peers.
But still, having released six albums, of which two reached number one on the Billboard
Top 200 album chart, and having 20 million albums sold, they arenít small fry. Friday
nightís performance proved why. |
