Just watched the live webcast on KROQ's
website...this was a festival type show with LIVE band #4 of 12 on the main stage
(Garbage, Beck, Jet, Madness, 311, Weezer, Oasis and Cake to follow LIVE).
It sounded like it took a few songs for the crowd to get into it (a band called Arcade
Fire was right before LIVE and honestly they had to be the worst band I have ever
heard in my life), but by Lightning Crashes the crowd was into it. Then CT started
to stomp on LJ and things got kicked into high gear...Abbreviated set due to the
type of show, but they did include The River and Show, and Ed said SFBM was coming
out "soon", no date. First time I heard the two new songs all the way through
and while they do seem a little more poppish, and designed to be more contemporary
radio singles, I have to say I like them. Hope there are some harder songs too on
SFBM.
By the way, they kept flashing "LIVE courtesy of Radioactive Records" on
the webcast...I thought they were done with Radioactive and had signed with Epic? |

I was at this show, and I must say
that LIVE sounded better than I have ever heard them. Unlike most other times I have
seen them, there were absolutely no sound problems and Ed's voice was strong, powerful,
and extremely clear. Kudos to the sound guys and everyone else who made the band
sound so good!
On to the show. Since this was an all day festival with 14+ bands playing, LIVE obviously
had to cut down their setlist -- but still managed to squeeze 9 songs into about
45 minutes. Unfortunately the festival atmosphere meant that people were walking
around the amphitheatre and/or chatting in their seats when bands they weren't familiar
with came on -- especially when LIVE played earlier in the day -- so not everyone
was into the music, but LIVE did put on a spectacular show. They started off with
"All Over You" which reminded people of who they were right away, then
moved on to "Selling the Drama" (which brought quite a few cheers) and
"The River." This was my second time hearing the new single live, and I
left totally impressed. It might not be the strongest song on the new album, but
it is really catchy and made me very optomistic for its success as a single -- if,
of course, their label promotes it the way that they should.
By the way, Ed introduced "The River" as the first single off the new album
which would be coming out "very soon," so hopefully we can still expect
November as a release date for the new record...
After "The River," the band broke into "Lightning Crashes" --
and seeing as how most people identify LIVE solely as this song, it came as no surprise
that it finally got people off their feet and cheering and singing along. Very good
version of it, again Ed's voice was spot on. "Lakini's Juice," "The
Dolphin's Cry," and "Heaven" followed, all of which sounded great
but were met with considerably less excitement (again, most people who listen to
KROQ probably have never even heard those three songs before).
"Show" was next, and was just AWESOME. I really hope it gets released as
a single, because it is extremely catchy -- it hasn't left my head since I heard
it on Saturday! The vibe in the audience seemed to indicate that other people liked
it as well, which is definitely a positive sign. The band finished off with "I
Alone" (no medley inserted this time, I would have liked to hear "Like
a Stone" again); the song brought big applause and excitement from an audience
who clearly enjoyed seeing the guys rock out on the song.
Overall, an outstanding performance. No surprises, but great sound and excellent
energy from the band that hopefully made them some new fans. By the way, the amphitheatre
holds 65,000+ people and is billed as the biggest amphitheatre in the nation, so
it was great to see LIVE play in front of such a huge crowd!
The funniest moment in the show was when a guy a few rows ahead of me started telling
everyone how he was glad to see LIVE come back after the lead singer had been an
alcoholic/drug addict and had gotten really fat. When I asked him the name of the
lead singer, he said, "I think it's Rob Thomas or something like that."
LOL! Don't worry, I proceeded to shoot him down and set the record straight for everyone
who heard his nonsense.
Other highlights of the show were Oasis, Beck, Weezer (most energized performance
of the night!), and The Arcade Fire, who played before LIVE and really blew people
away. Contrary to what Jim said in the other review, The Arcade Fire is AMAZING live
and was really the only "unknown" band to have the audience buzzing to
try to figure out who they were and where they could get their album. Even the DJs
and other bands kept praising them throughout the night (Garbage for sure, and others
as well that I can't remember), which is saying a lot. |
