Just got back from the LA County Fair
show, and I must say that the boys brought their "A" game again tonight.
My wife and I saw them recently in June at the HOB in Anaheim (awesome show in a
intimate and loud indoor setting), but I must say there is something I really enjoy
about seeing a LIVE show outdoors. After the venue got the sound firing on all cylinders
by the third song, the rest of the concert was pretty powerful and I thought sounded
fantastic. They played a somewhat abbreviated setlist at this County Fair setting.
I was pleasantly surprised at the number of people in the grandstands, I'd guess
about 3,500-4,000 (I think capacity was 6,000 and the only empty sections were the
top sides from where I was sitting).
This time I brought my wife, brother, and our 3 kids (10, 7 and 3 1/2) got to see
their first LIVE concert too, so if you saw a crazy Dad and his kids rockin' out
in the front row of Box 7 all night, that was us! My poor 3 1/2 year old kept asking
all night when they were going to play her favorite song "Stomp" (White
Discussion), and she crashed just before the encore. A very funny moment for me was
the mortified look on my 10 year old daughter's face when Ed raised his shirt and
started stroking his belly during All Over You.
I was kind of looking forward to hear the recent tweaked setlist from York and Kahuna
that included more early MJ songs, but instead the band played a modified version
of the standard BOP tour setlist, although slightly shorter as I mentioned above.
All Over You once again really got the crowd going. Highlight of this concert for
me, surprisingly, was I Alone (usually not my favorite song)...the best version of
this song I've seen them do, and Taylor went absolutely schizo literally jumping
around all over the stage. Lakini's Juice was incredible as usual and whipped the
crowd into a bigger frenzy.
Only one encore, which included what appeared to be the crowd favorite of the evening
Lightning Crashes (Ed let the audience sing a good portion of it on our own and he
seemed to dig it), but thank god they also squeezed in my all time favorite concert
song, and the appropriate closer for any LIVE concert, White Discussion. What a phenomenal
version of this one...in fact, they fooled us at the end and actually played a little
extended ending too.
Probably the last time I'll see them for awhile out here in SoCal (unless somehow
we can weasel our way into the private show in early November at the Avalon in Hollywood),
and they didn't disappoint. |

This was my first live show since 1997
and I was completely blown away. Man they just keep getting better and better. Gracey's
improv fills before, throughout and after White Discussion were awesome! I've never
seen him play like that before... That damn rented kit though. Did anyone else notice
Gracey's ride cymbal and the crash just above it kept moving out of position? His
drum tech ended up just sitting next to the kit, as he had to re-adjust it literally
every song! Taylor was going nuts as usual, especially during the encore. Awesome.
Adam was in great form as well and was really into the show. Pat was great as usual
too. In his own world just hammering away on that bass. Has anyone noticed how he
gets his pics? He kept putting his mouth right up to his bass rig and I thought he
was adjusting a knob with his mouth. Finally towards the encore I got a good look
and saw that he was grabbing his pic with his mouth off the top of the bass cabs.

I'm wiped from a drive back to Tucson
through a torrential rain storm in Phoenix but all the traveling was worth it to
see the show. A wonderful time! Cool to hear Overcome and of course White Discussion.
The fair was fun as well. Didn't know what to expect since the words Los Angeles
and fair don't exactly go together in my head but it was definitely a good time.
The fair goers seemed to love Live and were really into the show.
