I will summarize the uninspired and
lacklustre concert I saw last night (from front row mind you, right in front of Ed
:)
Major Problems:
1. Ed's voice. Not only is it girly, it has a Mickey Mouse quality to it. Absolutely
ruined the songs. Why the hell is he singing like that? !!!!!!!! I could kick his
ass!!!!! Voice problems? It would seem harder to screech than to growl. Ughhh....
2. No energy. Absolutely none. Ed would actually go sit down on the drum stand and
start drinking during songs. And be too lazy to get up in time to start singing
again, and miss words. Chad G. was pretty quiet too but he plays off Ed, so I don't
necessarily blame him.
3. Major, major technical problems. Pat's bass was so distorted it hurt the ears.
And the volume was so low. You could hardly hear Ed (which wasn't necessarily a
bad thing ), and the guitars were non-existent. People actually shouted out "turn
up the vocals", "turn up everything" inbetween breaks in songs. How
amateur. All I heard all night was Chad's drumming. I have a new respect for him.
He rocks. It just would have been nice to hear the rest of the band.
The Setlist:
1. Like I Do - I like that they're opening with this. Shows promise for it to be
the next single. However, major technical problems. There were no guitars for half
of the song. How do you play Like I Do without guitars?? Chad T and Pat were freakin
out but they held it together well.
2. Sanctity of Dreams - Ehh. I don't like this song, and seeing it live didn't change
that perception (unlike Like A Soldier from last year's concert).
3. Stood Up For Love
4. All Over You - All of these songs lost all of their power because there was no
fucking bass or guitars. I wish you could understand this. People were shouting out,
it was that bad. Drums and Mickey Mouse cannot carry a song and give it its power.
Just weak.
5. Beauty of Grey - Nice. Guitars were fine for this and Ed sang half normal.
6. Runaway - One of the few times I was truly happy not to be able to hear Ed.
7. Sweet Release - Quite good actually. But Ed's recorded voice just ruined the chorus.
8. Life Marches On - Ed began to show that he was alive at about this point of the
show. Aside from the lyrics, I'm starting to really like this song. It's funky.
9. Lakini's Juice - Could have cried. You could barely hear Chad's guitar riffs.
10. Run to the Water
11. Dolphin's Cry - Crowd loved it. Ed's voice was so quiet that the crowd just sang
the whole song. Didn't hear Ed once.
12. I Alone - Ed's enthusiasm seemed fake the whole night. He was going through the
motions and it showed. This was the song where he stopped swaying at center stage
with his arms wrapped around his body, and actually fucking moved.
13. Heaven - Ehhh, whatever. Crowd loved it. Sang the whole thing.
Encore #1
14. Overcome - Pretty much the first time Ed spoke to the audience was here. He forgot
if
it was Sept 11 and when the crowd told him it was, he proceeded the clumsily dedicate
the song to victims and those still in war. Great rendition though. He sang it in
its proper key and I love him for that, considering it was just him and a guitar
up there.
15. Selling the Drama - Liked it. Did it acoustically until halfway through the first
chorus, then broke out. Ed reverted back to Mickey Mouse however.
16. Lighthouse
17. Lightning Crashes - Ed sang the first line high pitched AGAIN. It was funny.
I'm right in front of him, and in complete exasperation, I throw up my hands and
yell out "why the fuck is he singing like that?" He sang the rest of the
song properly with a growl.... Hehehe....
Encore #2
18. White, Discussion - And then the band redeemed itself...... It took 17 songs,
but they finally solved their technical problems, and pulled out such a kick-ass
version of WD. Just when you thought it was done, they would jam out again and again.
Left a really great feeling with me from a concert that was so very, very disappointing.
Sorry it was so long a review but I don't get to do it very often. |
