Review by Chad
Taylor (guitarist of Live) |
The last two shows have been without
question strange, intense, happy, wet, and off the charts. After our Michigan show
I was ready for just about anything. What I was not ready for was a severe thunder
storm.
I knew when I was watching the afternoon news and tornadoes were touching down in
North Dakota, our first show in this state was in jeopardy. After fifteen years of
touring there are very few places LIVE hasn't played, and I was excited to be somewhere
new (I mean this physically but maybe mentally too).
On our two hour drive from Minot to Bottineau we encountered a huge storm front that
dropped buckets of rain on our two Suburbans. At times the rain was so thick that
it washed away our view of the road and the truck in front of us. To add to the tension,
we learned that our 18 year old driver had just moved here from Sacramento and had
never driven on a country road. Frankly I wonder if she really had her license.
When we arrived safely at the gig we were told the very same storm front that we
had just driven through was about to cancel the show. Having recently dealt with
the bad weather clusterfuck in Pensacola we decided to rush the road crew and hit
the stage as fast as we could.
Four songs into the set not a drop of rain had fell but clearly the wind and lightning
were closing fast. Adam and I walked to the front of the stage to begin Stood Up
For Love and the skys opened up as Gracey played the opening drum fill. The water
was flying horizontally, directly toward the stage, soaking us and the crowd in seconds.
Several stage hands rushed to try and cover our equipment but the fight was futile,
everything was going to get wet.
I know that electricity and water don't mix well but we were determined not to walk
off that stage. Patrick's bass rig shut down but Adam, Ed, Chad and I were able to
keep our focus and sang and played with all our hearts had to offer. Ed said the
rain was hitting his face so hard that it washed his contacts out of his eyes.
Many of you that have been reading this diary know of my personal passion for this
song. As the rain poured down I had a brief second of total Samadhi and was convinced
that the higher power binding us was shedding tears of love; both the audience and
band celebrated joy and happiness in the midst of this wild weather madness. Somewhere
in the middle of North Dakota magic was upon us once again.
Maybe the most amazing thing about this storm is that it lasted exactly as long as
Stood Up For Love, not a drop before or after! Then, as if we switched off the most
powerful theatrical effect ever, the sky cleared leaving the concert to finish in
the dark calm of nowhere; beautiful, graceful, still night of nowhere, North Dakota.
You really, really should have been there and those of you that were STAND as witness.
