My first experience of Live was 8 years
ago at a KROQ Christmas Party in Los Angeles in 1995 when Live were called back for
the second night due to their great performance. Since returning to England I had
heard very little about them, and tried to spread the word around to my friends
about how great they are, but hearing nothing about further albums I slowly forgot
about them... until I was bought surprise tickets to see them at Wolverhampton last
night. Then to top it all, we discovered they were supporting Bon Jovi last week.
That show was a bit of a let down - it was great to see them (even if it was from
a distance), but I seemed to be the only person who was supporting them - other people
were standing around chatting, and I heard some complaints about them - that nobody
had heard of them.
I was a bit more hopeful about their own gig last night, but it took my breath away.
It was a complete sell out, and should have been moved to the larger venue next door.
It was too hot in the venue, but the atmosphere was electric. The set list seemed
to be much the same as previous gigs (some variation might have been nice). Most
people knew all the words, and the songs from the last album went down very well.
Songs from "The Distance to Here" were particularly well received, especially
"The Dolphin's Cry" and "Run to the Water". And all the big hits
from Throwing Copper sent the crowd wild. More acoustics might have been nice
- Ed is so good at them. "Overcome" was great though.
Thanks Live for resurrecting my support for you! Come back to Birmingham UK soon. |

Ahhhh... The final gig on my mini-tour.
And what a fantastic one it was!
The setlist was the same as London except that they left the stage again before Overcome
in the encore and came back out to close it up with White, Discussion. And what a
rendition it was! Probably the best I've ever actually heard White, Discussion played
in all of my gigs. The boys were ROCKING THE FUCK OUT! Ed said that this was their
last show in the UK, so it had better be a good one. And the boys all backed him
up on it! Pat was being a total goof on stage. Dancing around and mimicking Taylor's
stomp and just being an all around silly boy. There was a bit of a problem at the
beginning of Lighthouse when Pat's bass just decided to turn itself up REALLY loud.
We thought there was an earthquake for a second and we could tell Ed was even confused!
But, they sorted it out really quickly and all was well.
We got to meet some nice fans after the gig (sorry security wouldn't let you guys
hang out to chat! I hope you went to the bus, cause that's where they all were!)
and while it was a bittersweet ending to my trip, it was still a fantastic night.
I hadn't had a vacation in three years, and even after a fiasco in Philly that got
me here a day late and a bit of a hard time with the woman at immigration who I guessed
thought I looked a bit dodgy, this was the best vacation I could have asked for!
Thank you to everyone who made it special in their own little way! |
