Just home to Dublin and was something
like a dream, Small venue 600 people, students Union, Soldout, second row from front,
Ed 5 yards away. Alot of people who turned up were not real fans, but that didnt
matter, everyone was a fan as soon as the guys kicked off. The songs that stood out
were I Alone, Stood up for Love, and most of all Lakinis Juice, the place went beserk.
When Ed introduced Runway he said " This is my favourite song on the Album"
someone shouted Runaway, he said "thats right" and off they went. I
noticed a few people crying when Ed played Overcome on his own acoustically, was
a very nice encore. Pat and Chad T decided to push each other around a bit during
Selling the Drama, got theyre wires caught up quite literally, the roadies had to
intervene. Chad T was well oiled by White Discussion and gave the bass a good bashing
against drum rise at the end, after the rest had returned to dressing room. He
also hit a few pedal and was getting all this feedback, a crazy guy! or was it that
bottle of whiskey.
Managed to get some 27 photos of the gig, but should have kept a few. Had a
pint in the venue bar afterwards, closed about 1hr after gig. Went looking for another
bar, streets deserted at this stage, who do we bump into as we leave the venue, some
6 hardcore live fans sitting waiting to meet the band. I thought this is only
some wishful thinking on they're behalf, but 5 mins later who came along only the
guys themselves, 1st was Ed complete with shades (it was dark) cowboys boots etc,
he was a true gent, stopped for photos, unfortunately I used all mine up in the venue
- damn. I decided that my birds of pray t shirt grey/blue- 1hr old - had to
be the autgraph t shirt so got them all to sign, spoke to each guy for a minute of
two. Chad T had obviously had one to many, the autograph spanned the length
of the t shirt.... Pat shouted at Chad T at one stage "these are ur fans, talk
to them" Chad T then raised his shirt and said "sign here" pointing
at his nipple. Pat then took up his shirt and showed a tattoo saying Chico
- I think, he said "How many people have theyre dog's name tattooed on them".
Spoke to Pat for aroun 5 mins about record deal with MCA finished, he said
that they were in the process of getting sorted out with another label - Interscope
possibly, he also said they write music that they like and it just so happens that
other people like it, they dont make records that they think people wanna hear, pointless.
He also talked about how poor the promotion of V was in Europe especially.
Chad G - CAG as he signs was really dead on, lovely guy, gave him stick about being
hard to photograph. Adam K was sooo down to earth, was telling us about his
band, we asked why he didnt play solo as support- he said "too many complications
and time constraints". Asked the guys to come back to Ireland and Ed said
they will be back next spring to play Ireland, yes!!!!
Somebody asked Pats guitar tech for autopraph, they thought he was Rialo, he joked
" if I was Rialo I wouldnt just have a bottle of beer in my hand". |

For some reason this concert took place
at the smaller of the two "Academy's" and it was quite a crush in there
as it was a sell out. A much better idea would have been to have had it in the other
where I'd previously seen Dio last year, as this venue was superb. Anyway on with
the review...
Support band Nu were unheard of to me and to be honest were quite good. Fronted by
the bastard offspring of Debbie Harry and Wendy James, she had a great vocal delivery
and complemented the heavy but commerical sound. The only downside was her banter
between songs. She was nervous and had poor rapport with the crowd. Overall 3/5.
Promising.
Live came on and started with Like I do, from their new Birds of Pray album. Whilst
it remains a lot of Live fans favourite song off this album I found it to be unsuited
to an opening number. It's too stop starty, but it did provide the first bout of
frenzied bouncing around by the crowd at times. Something which was to prevail throughout
the evening. Live songs tends to have lots of quieter bits mixed with lively bits
so the crowd is already refreshed for another jump around and never gets tired.
Next came another newie, Lighthouse which is my favourite and really went down well.
All over you was the next and was great. With it's fast moving powerful sound it
should have opened the gig. It often does by the way.
Other songs off the new album were well received and fit in very well, the crowd
knowing all the lyrics.
Highlights of the gig would have to be Lakini's Juice which was incredible. Nothing
else was played off the Secret Samadhi album, which was a surprise, considering the
high regard a lot of Live fans have for that album (not me btw, although it's good
it's a bit miserable compared to other releases). Instead they really played a lot
from The Distance To Here, apart from my favourite at the moment, The Distance! I
was a bit gutted by it's omission but thankfully the rest of the gig was so good
it made up for it. They played The Beauty of Gray off the first album which stood
out as being a bit weak musically compared to the later stuff and also Runaway which
on album I think is great was also weak live.
They had two encores which included Lightning Crashes, Overcome, Selling The Drama
(brilliant! and closed with the utterly superb White, Discussion. The crowd went
apeshit. An awesome ending to a brilliant gig. The first time I'd seen the band and
it won't be the last. This gig will take some beating this year! |

I arrived at the venue at around 17:30
with my sister Gail, we had travelled down from Livingston, Scotland in the morning.
This was for both of us a particularly emotional time as my brother-in-law Camay
Craig had died suddenly aged 35 yrs two weeks ago. He was a massive Live fan and
also had a ticket for the show and should have been there with us (we placed the
ticket with him in his coffin so that he could still get in). We had previously seen
them twice before at the Barrowlands in Glasgow on the Samadi and Distance tours,
but rather than spend £30 to watch them for 45 mins in a massive stadium with
no atmosphere but only 40 miles away in Glasgow, we decided Manchester would be far
better value for money. What a decision that turned out to be!!
When Live brought out the new CD we couldn't believe how ironic it was that the opening
track was called 'Heaven'. The line "I don't need no one to tell me about Heaven,
I Iook at my daughter and I believe", was perfect for Camay. We played the song
at his funeral and I prepared a speech that I read at the service which included
those lyrics, the emotion that flowed through everyone was so powerful and you could
see the effect the song was having on them. The song has now been adopted by family
and friends, as 'Camay's song'. I wondered as I got to the gig whether there was
any way that I could get a message to Ed and the guys to tell them my story and maybe
even ask Ed to dedicate the song to him during the gig ( long shot I know ). Anyway
I got speaking to a member of the crew outside the venue and he told me to wait here
and the band would arrive after 8pm in a large purple coach. True to his word at
around 8:15pm with around a dozen fans waiting, the purple coach pulled up and out
walked Patrick carrying a bottle of beer (I was gob smacked). I asked him for an
autograph and he duly obliged, a really nice laid back guy. I turned around then
to see Ed coming out of the coach dressed in a Grey shirt, jeans and sunglasses,
looking ultra cool and every bit the rock star that he is. I told him my story and
showed him a note that I'd written for him explaining the funeral and dedication
etc. He looked very moved by this and said he was sorry to hear of this. He asked
me for the note and put it in his pocket, what an absolute down to earth gentleman
he was. I also told him that my wife was at Ibrox the night before and had said that
they blew Bon Jovi of the stage, he said "oh thanks". At this time a top
guy from Newcastle who I'd only just met, took a photo of Myself, Ed and my sister
( forever in your debt Simon and partner, we received it today, you'll never know
what that meant to us ). Ed then signed my diary, to my brother-in-laws wife writing,
To Johan! Ed Live x. What an unbelievable 5 minutes that was, with my emotions getting
the better of me for a long while after.
We got in to the venue and was astounded to see the size of the place, it was tiny.
Why were they playing a venue this small? (capacity of 750 the guy at the box office
told us) It didn't make any sense but I was told by 'my new crew friend' that he'd
heard that they were coming back to do their own 'big' tour soon. Here's hoping!
They also had very little merchandise to buy with no programmes and only a couple
of choices of T-shirt. He said that they had only brought one lorry this time around
instead of two. As we stood waiting for them to come on I started to realise that
this was going to be something special and a very intimate gig. They hit the stage
in typical Live fashion, with the band on first and Ed strolling on seconds later
to a huge cheer. The stage looked around 6 mtrs wide with very little room to move
around. I won't bore you with the set list as you probably already know it by now,
but suffice to say they rolled out killer songs one after the other, hardly pausing
between them. Can someone tell me why this band aren't massive worldwide with a portfolio
of material like that? Highlights for me were Run To The Water, Selling The Drama,
Overcome where Ed was absolutely unbelievable (just him a spotlight and an acoustic
guitar - pure genius) and Lightning Crashes that works really well live. I was a
wee bit disappointed that they didn't do Dance With You cos I love Ed's vocals on
that one and is very atmospheric.
Anyway the moment came when they played Heaven and Ed announced it as the first single
off the new album, crashing straight into it (what a song!!) but no dedication, I
was gutted but understood, as I honestly think he really did want to say something
but probably got caught up in the emotion of things and it just slipped his mind.
At the end of the song however he did say something as the crowd were cheering but
we couldn't make out what he said. Does anyone know what he said or has anyone recorded
the gig so that I can listen again for it? Please let me know. The gig was even better
than I'd hoped for and probably a one off. I can't imagine ever witnessing them in
again in a venue so small, especially if they continue to churn out masterpieces
like 'Birds Of Prey'. Unfortunately a large proportion of the crowd were students
and were just out to see the next band in town but got a lot more than they bargained
for. Pity that the tickets couldn't have been snapped up by the real 'Friends Of
Live', the ones that really deserved to witness what 750 of us did that night. |
