I did get to make it to the show and
am mostly glad I went. (I was about 1/3 block back from the stage, by the skyjack
with the cops on it.) The only real surprise to the show was the number of songs
from Birds of Prey. The crowd, alas, sucked, though it looked like crowd surfers
were actually at a minimum. (Some drunk guy after the show said he felt like he'd
been beaten up. I told him if I'd been in the crowd I would've beaten him up. He
said that you should expect to be hit and kicked when you went to a concert, that
it was part of the fun of the show. I wanted to kick him then.)
I hate festivals and GA shows because of the millers, the people milling about, smoking,
drunk, talking on their cell phones -- the ones who only want to hear "Lightning
Crashes". I think they were shocked that they didn't really know any songs until
"Lakini's Juice", and a lot of people left during the first part of the
set. Ed was trying to get the crowd into it, but with the exception of the first
10-12 "rows" of people, the crowd just was not there for it. It got better
toward the end, but I definitely prefer shows where Live headlines and people come
to see them. Last week Train played four nights at a small local venue (1500 or so
people), recording a live CD the first night. I would love to see Live do something
like that!)
Not a spectacular show but not disappointing, on the whole. The Audioslave bit and
Ed stomping with Chad were nice. Comforting to see the "pale blue colored iris"
hand sign, too.
On a silly side note, I have mentioned a thousand times that the first song my son
ever wiggled to was "Dance With You" during a pre-show acoustic set when
I was 5 months pregnant. Well, I would like to report that this one was wiggling
to "Run to the Water" as its (her?) first choice of songs. My son is now
a big fan of the Chili Peppers, Jet, and Luscious Jackson and will specifically request
to hear "Heaven". (He's just as likely to request the Wiggles, though.)
I am keeping my fingers crossed that this one will also have good taste in music. |
