Review by TheFunkyCaboose of South Carolina
Jason Mraz was pretty entertaining, it was an acoustic set. Boy can rap, but he likes to say his own name alot. Apparently all the ladies blow kisses at him. After awhile he started sounding the same but luckily the same was still good. Alot better than...

Fuel. Man, dissapointing. The most fun of watching them play was figuring out which songs the lead singer was actually singing and which ones he wasn't. It was fairly easy unfortunately. Apparently it's also possible for one guitar player to play 4 guitar parts at the same time. This coupled with the fact that their latest material is straight off of a Alice in Chains record just made for an unpleasant experience. Also of note, Freedom Weekend is sort of a family event, and Anderson is in the heart of the South's "Bible belt". So naturally the lead singer thought it would be fun to "God f-ing bless" us all the time. He also wanted to see Anderson's titties. This is the South bro, we don't say the F word and we don't show our titties, give it up.

Live. It was the usual cookie cutter set list, designed to play all their hits and not anything else. (find the other recent setlists and take out all the songs that aren't from BOP or singles if you want a setlist, I don't remember.) I didn't expect anything else since it is a festival in Anderson, SC, where Live isn't exactly booming with popularity. However, the boys are on. Ed's voice sounds absolutely amazing. I was the only big Live fan in my group and everyone else was saying that Ed sounded absolutely incredible. The BOP songs were very rockin' live and I have a new appreciation for Life Marches on. Mr. Gracey put on quite a show and was full of energy. Chad T. and Pat were what they always have been on stage. Chad's guitar tones sounded gooooood. All in all Run to the Water was the best song of the night, it was incredible. Like the York show the language was toned down incredibly, so at least the band paid attention to the atmosphere unlike their SC-tittie wanting STP ripoff friends Fuel.

Thoughts:

Last night confirmed my thought that Live will never be popular on rock radio again. The crowd loved Fuel with their piped in vocals and songs that were all in the same key. The crowd left while Live was playing their own music which oh no! doesn't all sound the same. This is the problem with rock music today. People want to hear crap and that's what they will listen to and buy. However, all the old folks on the lawn were digging Live, which I guess is the reason for Heaven's success. This combined with whatever is going on with Live's promotion and record label, all things none of the guys in the band have control over, is the death of Live's popularity.

As far as Live's actual music direction for this album, because we all know the next one will be completely different, the songs on the CD are happy and full of energy. It is the best possible reflection on Ed's current thoughts on life. He can't force himself to be depressed. Also I have a hunch that the label got it's dirty little hands in the making of BOP and either rushed it or turned down some great songs. Much like how V was released when from how it sounds it was never intended to be. (although I love V) Basically what I am trying to say is, Live's current musical direction is what they want to do, as we have seen with all of their albums. They will try something completely different next time I am sure. BOP sports some great songs, even better guitar tones, and Mr. Gracey's finest performances yet. If you want to hear Throwing Copper or Secret Samahdi, go get the CD and put them in your CD player and listen to them. I for one would be dissapointed if their next effort sounds like either of those albums because they've done it before.

Whew, that was long but I had to unload it somewhere. Have a great one.
