Because I had arrived early for the
show along with 3 other fans we were able to walk in and see the final songs of the
soundcheck. The guys were just finishing up Pillar of Davidson, and then after a
few moments we recieved the intro from Lakini's Juice....it was like a mini concert
for 4 people (plus the usual technicians and roadies who were on hand). I've never
seen a soundcheck, so for me this was just amazing, plus it was pillar...I mean,
come on!! Awsome!!!
About 45 minutes later the show started. Although it can be said that the show had
some bumps in it, it was amazing to see these 5 guys just tower onstage. You knew
they were so happy to be there and the fans knew it too. In the end, after bringing
out other guests of the evening, the ultimate tribute any rock band could do, was
to invite their mothers onstage to join them in a bow. With flowers in hand these four
ladies gave each band member a hug and a kiss, in what truly is, standing up for
love.
I'm not sure if I'll ever see another show like this again. It was simply a jewel
in the rough. It's shows like these that really let you appreciate the music, and
the real people who create it. I had a blast, and Im pretty sure everyone else did
too, especially the guys and their families. |

Ok, let me start off by saying that
this is probably the best performance i've ever seen by LIVE. now, let me tell
you why i was disappointed. they haven't played york in 10 years and this is
a "special" 20th anniversary show, and we get the standard set list and
an hour and a half show. i don't know what happened to all these special surprises
and special guests we kept hearing about. shelby lynne wasn't there. they
had don carn, their middle school music teacher, playing the violin on "pillar
of davidson." they had mack white (i think that was his name) playing
the bongos on "they stood up for love". ed said this guy played on
death of a dictionary. towards the end of the show, ed said "if you have
a son in the band, and you're a woman, you need to go meet matt gracey over at the
side door." then they played "dance with you" and after the
song, they brought their moms out on stage. each one was carrying a box of
roses (i assume) and ed said "without these ladies, we really wouldn't be here!"
so that was cool that they recognized the mothers. the venue was great.
the sound was amazing. the lights were awesome. i was just expecting
something a little bit different than the normal show. but i'm still glad i
got to go. |

I thought the show was a good one soundwise
and I really liked the venue. I also got up front for the encore so that was cool.
I was disappointed with the same old standard setlist. I was really expecting something
different. And I cannot believe they didn't do Shit Towne OR White, Discussion! The
show was way too short and not very special at all. I still really enjoyed it though,
I guess I just had higher expectations. I have to say that Taylor was going nuts
up there! He was stomping his ass off! |

Ok, this review is going to be short
for now since I have to leave for DE very soon....so where do I begin.....the Strand
is an amazing place! If you ever are in York, you should definately check it out!
Not a place where I ever pictured LIVE to play-but it was cool! The show wasnt all
that special in my eyes. It was like a typical concert with only two guests. I dont
recall the name of the bongo player (any helpers?) and Don Carn, the guys high school
music teacher. No Shelby Lynn...oh well, that didnt bother me too much there. I must
say this past show in AC still is my #1 show. Dont recall the set list, but as I
said earlier, typical show..all songs I have heard in the past and they played for
1 1/2 hours. Oh and at the end of the show Ed called up all the moms and introduced
them--that was sweet! So, it was a very early night! Than alot of people want to
the Hardware Bar like down the street from The Strand....that bar was awesome as
well! The guys did show up there and it was crazy packed. |

I still think my favorite live show
was "back in the day" at the Metro in downtown Chicago. Granted, you could
tell that the show was Taylor's baby and he really wanted it to go off well by how
he played tonight. I wonder if the stiff as a board audience had anything to do with
the fact that much of the crowd is now hitting their 30's, 40's, and older. with
their kids in tow.... Kinda gives a little reality check at a rock concert that we
all age.
I really don't like the Strand for a rock concert. One of the main detractors for
me was watching the justified anger of disabled fans who couldn't see the band because
of where they were seated. It's natural for people to stand at a rock concert (as
opposed to a play, etc.)... but for those who can't stand...to be seated in the middle
of the floor level is evil.
I also wasn't crazy about the height of the ceiling vs the length and width of the
room.... the dimensions of the room didn't help the muffled acoustics.
As for the setlist... I enjoyed hearing Pillar of Davidson, foible and all... in
fact, the sound issues with the violin causing it to come in later probably actually
made it better. I like the live violin with the song... but it needed to be practiced
more.
I'd really have liked to hear them concentrate more on their older stuff for the
"anniversary" show. I miss Mental Jewelry days... but then, I wish a lot
of things were like they were back in '94 (ish). I just can't have that wish. Lightening
is only SUPPOSED to strike once in a single place...
The York Daily Record had a front page article on the show. It was written by a Live
fan, you can tell, but at the same time, it was trying desperately not to be too
honest and blunt. They blamed the crowd for the subdued energy.
Truth be told... it's not just the crowd... forgiveness for lack of support and for
leaving goes both ways, and I think it just felt awkward... like a detention. I have
the feeling that the York Fair would be much better.... Maybe everyone can be more
free to express themselves, let loose, and have a good time.
And darnit, I wanna hear more Mental Jewelry and a little more DOAD! Really... I
just want to water my paper flowers. |
