This was one of those nights that started
off shitty but turned out to be fantastic at the end. First of all, I was somewhat
pissed off at the folks at California Speedway; their directions led me to a street
that was completely blocked off because of the race earlier that day, so I had to
drive around an extra 30 minutes to actually make it to the venue. Then, when I got
to the show, I paid $40 (for myself and my girlfriend), only to have NO ONE ever
look at my ticket -- I could have easily walked right up to the stage without ever
having paid a penny, as I later learned a lot of people actually did. Needless to
say, I wasn't too happy as I waited around the stage for LIVE to come on.
Making matters worse, the crowd was composed largely of 35-40 year old NASCAR fans
who had obviously been drinking all day. I have nothing against middle aged men or
NASCAR, but they could have really ruined the show for me. Some "highlights"
of these people's actions: purposely shaking up beer cans and opening them up so
that beer sprayed all over everyone in their vicinity, including small children;
groping, grabbing, and chanting "show your tits" to anyone with breasts
who happened to pass by; and screaming incoherent things for incoherent reasons right
in the ears of the people they surrounded. Uggh.
Anyhow, at 7:15 the show finally started with "Like I Do." A noticeably
bulked-up Ed came out in a white wife-beater and shades, and the guys did a pretty
decent version of the song. The second song was "The Sanctity of Dreams,"
which I didn't really get a chance to pay attention to because I was distracted by
the San Bernardino Police Dept. coming in to take away some drunk people who had
obviously gotten out of hand because they could barely walk -- and a diminutive 50
year old in front of me shouting obscenities at the Police Department as they hauled
the culprits away. Again, uggh.
As usual, "All Over You" woke the crowd up, and from then on the concert
really rolled, and the distractions were pretty much over. I was pleasantly surprised
to hear so many people into "They Stood Up For Love" (a great song in concert!).
Some other highlights of the main set: "The Beauty of Gray," quite possibly
my favorite LIVE song, period; "Sweet Release," which kicks much ass live;
"Run to the Water," which has the hooks and power to really go over well
with a concert crowd; and "I Alone," during which Chad Taylor played like
a man with his hair on fire, going absolutely nuts on his guitar.
After a brief intermission, Ed came out by himself and did a solo version of "Turn
My Head," which sounded lovely, although it wasn't the best choice considering
the rowdy crowd and large, very open, outdoor venue. "Selling the Drama"
was a fan favorite (as usual), and then they finished off the set with a beautiful
"Lightning Crashes," with the crowd singing many of the chorus parts of
the song.
Sadly enough, there was only one encore this time, which left me with my main disappointment
of the night -- no "White, Discussion." I am now a pathetic 0-for-6 in
seeing the song played in concerts I have attended. I only hope they'll play it in
Anaheim in June.
Overall, though, the band sounded great, probably the second best LIVE show I have
seen, behind the L.A. show on the tour they did with Counting Crows. |

AMAZING ENERGY! The concert was great
met alot of fun peopole, as well as some drunk Nascar fans who were a bit irritating...
During the whole show but what can you do... They started off with LIKE I DO and
ended with LIGHTNING CRASHES... Chad had no more mohawk... They all looked good and
sounded amazing.... I got some really good pictures...and the best part is... I GOT
IN FOR FREE... it was awesome.... cant wait till the Anaheim show!... see you all
there! |

It was definitely good to see LIVE
again, the Seattle show was such a long time ago... The guys were great, loved Taylor's
look, cowboy hat and flower shirt. The setlist really hasn't changed all that much.
I was happy to hear Shittowne again and Turn My Head was beautiful. My only gripe
was they didn't end the show with White, Discussion. Ken and I screamed for them
to play it, but sadly it didn't happen. The Nascar crowd was really annoying, a bunch
of nasty drunks. I had my ass grabbed, had beer poored all over me, got slammed into
the barrier several times. |
