I go to Washington University and got
to check out the show tonight. Live was FANTASTIC. Utterly amazing. Throughout the
show I found myself thinking, "Now THAT's a rock 'n' roll band!" I'd never
seen a Live show before - I just never got to go to a lot of concerts when I was
younger, though I'm a St. Louis native and I know Live has been here at least once
or twice since 1996, when I became conscious of the alternative rock that was exploding
in the mid-'90s. I've never been a hardcore Live fan, and I think it's because I
never heard them play at a live venue before now. If I had, I think I'd have become
a dedicated fan much sooner, because if the show tonight was any indication, they
just have so much power and passion...
Anyway, less talk about me and more about Live, right? I got a good vantage point
for the show (standing under a tree to the left of and in front of Beaumont Pavilion,
which was where Live was set up - there was a nice clearing in the crowd under the
tree) and got to see and hear their entire set pretty clearly except for when tall
guys were standing in front of my friends and I, blocking the view. (I'm only 5'6"
- average height for a girl - so yeah.) It was standing only, no seats (some couches
at the back of the Quad, though), since it was in our Quad as the culmination of
the all-day festival WILD (Walk In Lay Down - bad grammar, but that's the name of
the event) for WU students only. It was free to students with ID, but guests could
get in if a WU student bought a ticket (one per student) for $20. I don't know that
a lot of people did that, but the show was definitely worth the money. I think a
huge portion of the school was at that event - the Quad was packed tonight.
So let's see. From what I've seen of other reviews, people usually want to know what
the setlist was and what band members were wearing, among other things. I can't recall
the setlist, though if prompted I could probably remember a lot of the songs that
were played, just not necessarily in order. I was very caught up in the energy of
it all, screaming my head off and dancing and such - as was much of the crowd in
the half of the Quad closest to the stage. (The rest of the Quad was also filled
with people, but they weren't as densely packed as in front of the stage, nor were
they necessarily paying as much attention to the set. WILD is quite an alcohol-packed
event, so a lot of people were drinking and socializing in the back.)
From my vantage point I could see everyone but Gracey, as he was set up to the right
(from my viewpoint) of a big support on stage right. Ed was wearing a tight gray-green
tank top - sleeveless, but not a wife-beater, it had more fabric than that - and
I couldn't see what pants/shorts he had on; they didn't really catch my attention.
What Patrick was wearing also didn't really stand out to me. There was another singer/guitarist
along tonight, too, standing to the right of Chad at far stage left who I couldn't
make out as well. Who I really noticed was Chad Taylor. I'm going to sound like a
silly fangirl saying this, but he looked exceedingly hot and sexy tonight. He wore
a cowboy hat and had those sideburns and a light (possibly plaid) short-sleeve button-down
shirt and altogether it was quite effective. His playing tonight was also just completely
_on_. I was very impressed. (And I'd like to know where he got that hat - I'd love
to have one like that.)
As I said earlier, the show's energy was great. As this was a show on a college campus
- a free show, at that, and one filled with drunk college kids - I was impressed
with how much the crowd _did_ respond, given the socializing and drinking. People
really got into the songs that they remembered from Live's older albums - "Lightning
Crashes," other radio-played singles, etc. - and the two singles that have been
out from "Birds of Pray," and then also got into some of the lesser-known
stuff. Live is just a fantastic band live - while I wasn't familiar with some of
the material they played, it all sounded great and was played with real passion.
There weren't any problems with sound that I could tell, though at times Chad and
Patrick walked over to stand in front of the drums and gestured at the sound tech
in the back to turn up levels or push down levels.
All in all, I and probably a good 400-500 WU students along with me were highly impressed
by the energy and sound that Live had in this show. This will easily stay in my memory
as one of the best rock 'n' roll shows I've ever seen. |

The show was outstanding. It
was my third time seeing Live. I wouldn't say it was the best performance,
but because of the atmosphere, I would say it was certainly the most fun. Like
I Do works really well as an opener, but not as good as Intro and Simple Creed.
The crowd went absolutely crazy during Lakini's Juice. Before Overcome, Ed
did his little speech about 9/11 and mentioned the recent abuse of Iraqi prisoners.
The crowd was into it most of the show, although no one seemed to know the words
to the Birds of Pray material other than Heaven and Run Away. Chad's solo on
Run Away was killer. Lightning Crashes was definitely the crowd favorite (although
not my favorite). We tried to meet the band after the show, but they ran out
of the backdoor of one the campus buildings almost immediately. We were about
a minute late. The guard back there told us that we had just missed them and
that only two people had been back there when they came out. Despite this disappointment,
it was still a fantastic show and well worth all of the hits in the back I received
during the show. |
